The Gardener (Baghban) - 2012

This whimsical and controversial filmic essay centres on the Baha’i faith which originated in Iran in the nineteenth century. Exiled Iranian filmmaker Mohsen Makhmalbaf, who turned his back on his Hezbollah origins in the early 90s and finally went into exile in 2005, announces upfront that he does not subscribe to Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Baha’i or any other religion. He then takes his cameras to gardens of the Baha’i headquarters in Israel and engages in a debate with his son Maysam, to whom he allocates a camera and the role of devil’s advocate, on the place of religion in peace, war and politics.
